Personality: Maggie is a survivor, the kind of person that finds a way to make it through no matter what situation she is in and yet it is what she has survived over the years that has hardened this woman. She's not overly trusting of others, using a combination of sarcasm and a hard demeanor to keep people at arms length. She's reluctant to let anyone get too close and is likely to push before ever allowing them to see the real Maggie as we see her do with Hal. There is that softer side and we see that in the way she supports Sarah through her pregnancy, even if she claims she's only hanging around the woman to get seconds at meal time, as if Maggie doesn't want anyone to see the good in her.

Maggie's sordid past, though something she tries not to discuss continues to drag her down. She often feels that she isn't good enough, doesn't fit in and though the alien attacks theoretically allowed her to reinvent herself, Maggie acts as though she will always be the drug addict who had a child in prison. This part of her shouldn't define her but at least in her mind, it does. It is the very thing that she cannot escape and though it may have been a result of a series of bad decisions and not because she is by nature, a bad person, the guilt that she carries continues to drag her down. One could argue that it was why she was able to get through the three months she spent with Pope's Gang; Because in her mind she didn't deserve any better than what they did to her.

Maggie is however somebody who wants to make up for her mistakes and it shows in all that she does to support the 2nd Mass. Her determination to do the right thing by these people, threatening Pope on more than one occasion that she will take him down if he tries to cross them shows that whether she realizes it or not, she has not given up hope of having a better life, nor is she as terrible as she believes she is.

She herself admits that she doesn't know when to quit, pushing peoples buttons or broaching subjects that are better left ignored. It never seems like she does it to intentionally hurt the other person but is perhaps just another example of how Maggie keeps people at arms length, though she has proven her ability to recognize her faults and will attempt to apologize if she believes one is owing.

Maggie likes to be self-sufficient and has proven an ability to take care of herself when it comes to wielding a gun or dealing with the more unsavory people of the world, (Pope case in point). She has a great deal of empathy towards others, something that isn't readily apparent but can be seen in the way she helps Anne Glass learn to fire a gun so that she never has to feel vulnerable again, and in the way she tries to get Hal to ease up on Ben on numerous occasions. When she sees herself in other people she feels the need to help them in the ways that nobody ever helped her before.

From seeing how Maggie tries to look out for Jimmy at the end of Season 1, how she tries to shield Lourdes from what happened to her during her time with Pope's and and how she looks out for Ben you get the impression that she has a protective streak, especially when it comes to those who are younger. She will attempt to put them at ease and even champion them when she sees others are attacking them or putting them down. This protectiveness may be subtle but it is a recurring scene with Maggie throughout seasons one and two.

Though you wouldn't say that she has completely given up on life, couldn't say that given the choices she has made in recent months (joining the 2nd Mass, fighting alongside them, even allowing them to get close to her), she herself says that after beating the cancer that nearly took her life when she was sixteen, she never completely recovered. She turned to drugs after she went into remission which suggests she's trying to rediscover that spark even if her means aren't the best kind. Maggie is clearly somebody who wants to live, not just get by but to enjoy life again, she just doesn't seem to know how to do it.

Maggie is the kind of person who would rather ignore, avoid or even downright run away when faced with an awkward or uncomfortable situation. When avoiding Hal after he confesses his feelings for her fails, she admits to putting in for a transfer to another unit, as if taking herself out of Hal's life will make the so called problem go away. This incident also suggests that Maggie is not one to follow her heart, but make decisions based on what she thinks is best. It becomes apparent later that she does have feelings for Hal but is willing to ignore them because she logically believes it's best they don't get involved, or perhaps as Karen points out, because Maggie believes she isn't good enough for him.

In dealing with her in a one on one situations, she comes across not only as standoffish but in the right circumstances, downright aggressive. She projects an air of "don't fuck with me", not only to keep people emotionally distant but to make sure they know she is not a weak and willing victim. She doesn't appear to be taken in by arrogance, (once again, her dealings with Pope) and you get the impression from how she interacts with Hal that she cannot be so easily charmed. She does however warm up to people over time but will still fall back on sarcasm and light and easy banter in order to avoid more serious topics coming up.

The two most significant canon relationships couldn't be more different if they tried. First we have the antagonistic relationship between Maggie and Pope. Though little has been revealed about the three months Maggie spent with Pope's gang, we know that he saved her and are given the impression that the life Maggie led back then is very different to the one she is leading now. Maggie is somebody who isn't afraid to call Pope on his bullshit and yet, she won't turn him in either, even though there are times when she could have gotten him in trouble.

You get the idea that despite an intense dislike, she feels that she owes him in some way, even if she thinks he is little more than a degenerate asshole. It could be argued that Pope reminds Maggie too much of the person that she used to be, which is in part why she can't stand him, the other part being that she harbors a great deal of anger towards him for what happened during her time with his crew. He may not have done anything to her, but he didn't stop it from happening either. For whatever reason (Yet to be explained in Canon), Pope knows a great deal about the life that Maggie led before the aliens attacked.

On the flip side we have Maggie's growing relationship with Hal. She might still have trouble saying it to him or even to herself but Maggie has fallen for Hal and hard, what started as a rocky relationship really finding its feet after Hal was hurt by Karen and the subsequent months spent in a wheelchair. Hal is the first person who is able to break down the walls she has surrounding her. She seems to adopt an almost youthful persona around him and is more honest with him than she is with other people, even if she tries to lie to him at first. Hal is good for Maggie as he isn't afraid to call her on her lies and he forces her to confront the very parts of herself that she tries to keep hidden.

Given her canon point the relationship does have some cracks in it. Maggie has a great deal of internalized guilt for not knowing what had been happening with Hal in the last week and the seeds of doubt that were sewn by both Pope and Karen have the potential to see Maggie sabotage their relationship. It's all a question of whether Hal will continue to call her out and if when push comes to shove, Maggie makes the right choices and not make decisions that impact them both without discussing them.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

  • Maggie is skilled with the use of various projectile weapons including assault rifles, handguns and crossbows.

  • A skilled scout, she's been acting as a Scout for the Second Mass. since she joined up with them and in season 3 has shown her ability to step into a leading capacity when going on missions.

  • Maggie's fearlessness can be seen as both a blessing and a curse. She has it in her mind that she doesn't deserve to live, even that part of her is dead already and as such can be very careless with her own safety. Facing her own death doesn't scare Maggie.

  • Hal. He's both her greatest strength and in some ways her greatest weakness. She will lie, cheat, steal, hide things to protect Hal rather than consider the greater good. That said? He's the only person to call her on her shit.

The blonde that pushed herself up into a sitting position had the look of somebody that had been doing it rough for a while. Her clothes were worn, oil stains and dirt on her black denim jeans, the material of her shirt grown thin and the once white print on the front of it had become grey and cracked. Despite the dirt that smudged her fair skin and hard brown eyes that darted around , you wouldn’t go so far as to think she’d been living on the streets but one look at her said that wherever she came from, it hadn’t been pretty.

The quiet calm of her appearance belied the truth of what was going on in her head, Maggie running through dozens of scenarios, each one more unsettling than the next. An explosion she couldn’t remember happening and this was how her brain tried to process the death that was seconds away. Bugs that burrowed inside of her and crawled beneath her skin making her see things that weren’t real. How many times had she been with Hal since he'd been infected?

She blinked rapidly, rubbing her eyes, ignoring the burn in the back of her throat brought on by that thought, body shuddering as she exhaled and tried to calm her thoughts. She had to keep it together, think clearly and work out where in the hell she was. Find Hal, hell find Pope even, just so long as it meant finding a way out.

Anger masked her panic as she got to her feet and discovered the holster she wore empty, the twin colts gone, no knife, no way of defending herself. She might be scrappy as hell but standing at not much more than five –four, Maggie wasn’t going to be winning any fights if it came to that.

It hit her then, confusion turning to disbelief as she pulled air into her lungs, deep breaths through her nose that threatened to make her smile if not for her current predicament. More than a year since the attacks and there was one thing she’d gotten used to; The smell of death and decay.

“Oh we are so not in Charleston anymore.”

    MAGGIE | FALLING SKIES

"I didn’t know that Maggie, I’ve never met her before. The only Maggie I know is the one standing right here in front of me. The one that saved my butt more times than I can count and put her own life on the line for the Second Mass over and over again."
